You think your construction project is taking a long time? The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain has been under construction for over 120 years! Surface Protection Expert Heather just returned from a European vacation and noticed that construction and renovation projects there often take decades or even longer to complete. Renovation projects for structures of historical significance such as Il Duomo in Florence, Italy, and Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City are constantly being renovated, cleaned, and reinforced. In such projects as these, builders are careful to use surface protection and dust control measures. Surface protection prevents damage to fragile, antiquated buildings and dust control protects interior artwork from being covered in grime. Dust control also prevents the droves of tourists from inhaling potentially toxic dust!
What do you think are some of the biggest differences between construction projects in the USA and in Europe? Feel free to comment!

Surface Protection Expert Heather Ley just had an article published about why it is better for contractors to support small local businesses rather than large box stores when purchasing construction supplies. Although prices can be a bit higher than places like Home Depot or Lowes, nothing beats the customer service of a small, family owned business like Builders Site Protection!

Supporting Small Business: Why It’s a Smart Move for Contractors to Buy Local Vs Large Box Stores
Great news for home builders! The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) announced today that builders’ confidence in the single-family housing market increased for the fourth consecutive month in January. This is the highest level of confidence seen since June 2007 and provides a clear indication that however slowly, the home buying market is steadily improving.
“Builders are seeing greater interest among potential buyers as employment and consumer confidence slowly improve in a growing number of markets, and this has helped to move the confidence gauge up from near-historic lows in the first half of 2011,” noted NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. Builder confidence improved across all four regions in January, with a 9-point gain in the Northeast, a 1-point gain in the Midwest, a 2-point gain in the South, and a 5-point gain in the West.
Here at Builders Site Protection we are thrilled to hear that building is picking up! Since the home buying market crashed hard here in California, things have been challenging for our local customers. We wish our customers the very best and as things pick up, we look forward to providing the highest quality surface protection products available!
Builders Site Protection is proud to announce that we have been distinguished as a winner of CalRecycle’s 2011 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP). WRAP is a program from California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery which encourages businesses to implement policies to reduce waste and divert trash from landfills. Builders Site Protection went to great lengths to increase environmentally-friendly company policies. We diverted thousands of pounds of waste from landfills by reusing supplies and recycling as much as possible. We increased our green product line and encouraged customers to purchase reusable products made from recycled materials such as Doorguard, Edge Pro, and Clean and Safe. CEO Pat Mullen states, “Builders Site Protection is thrilled to be recognized as a low-waste producing company. This year we have further developed our green product lines, increased company recycling, and encouraged our customers in the construction industry to go green. We are proud to serve as an example of a successful green surface protection company.”

Heather recently published an article that describes the best way to contain dust during hospital renovation projects. Minimizing dust created from renovation activities is critically important because sensitive patients may become more sick or even die from toxic mold or other harmful particulates. Builders Site Protection has products such as mobile containment units, ZipWall systems, fire-resistant plastic sheeting, shoe covers, and many more protection products which will help prevent the spread of dust. The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) was approved last week after two years of development. The Code applies to all new and renovated commercial buildings and residential buildings over three stories high. Unlike LEED, which is entirely voluntary, the IgCC creates a mandatory floor with enforceable minimum standards. This mandatory floor includes specific requirements for site development and land use, energy and water efficiency, air quality, and a 50% diversion of construction materials from landfills. Local governments and states have the choice of adopting the IgCC. Once implemented, it’s enforceable. The IgCC will go into effect beginning in March 2012.

The gals at Builders Site Protection recently spoke with a customer who purchased protective coveralls a few weeks ago for a job. He said that when he was in a bind the day before Halloween, he used the coveralls and a respirator as a scary costume! Surface Protection Expert Heather did the same thing at a Halloween party last Friday and the costume was a great hit. We are happy that our customers are finding many different ways to use our surface protection products. We hope that everyone had a happy Halloween!
